Sydney Chapman (1888-1970), British mathematician and geophysicist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1919. He was awarded the Royal Medal, 1934, and Copley Medal, 1964, and delivered the Bakerian Lecture in 1931 on ‘Some phenomena of the upper atmosphere’.
