Robert John Strutt, 4th Baron Rayleigh (1875-1947), British physicist and peer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1905, served as its Foreign Secretary between 1929 and 1934, and Vice President between 1930 to 1934. He was awarded the Rumford Medal in 1920, ‘On the ground of his researches into the properties of gases at high vacua’, and delivered the Bakerian Lecture in 1911 and 1919.
