Portrait of John Watson Warman, with his ‘Hydraulicon’, exhibited at the Royal Society’s conversazione, or soirée, at Burlington House, London, on the evening of 19 June 1903. The portrait is one of four figures, the remainder showing older designs for water organs.
Cutting from the Illustrated London News, 20 June 1903, p.955. Captioned below: ‘AN UNUSUAL EXHIBIT AT THE ROYAL SOCIETY SOIREE: MR. JOHN WATSON WARMAN’S HYDRAULICON, OR WATER ORGAN.’ The portrait is signed lower right: ‘A. HUGH FISHER’.
J. W. Warman’s musical instrument was exhibit no. 21 in the Principal Library of Burlington House. The Royal Society’s exhibition catalogue describes his display as ‘A reproduction of the hydraulic organ of the ancients’.
