Sir Derek Harold Richard Barton (1918-1998), British organic chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1954. He received the Society’s Davy Medal, 1961, Copley Medal, 1972 and was the joint recipient of the Nobel Prize (Chemistry) in 1969 with Odd Hassel (1897-1981) for their ‘for their contributions to the development of the concept of conformation and its application in chemistry’.
