Sir Ernst Boris Chain (1906-1979), German-British biochemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1949. Chain, Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) and Sir Howard Walter Florey (1898-1968) were joint recipients of the Nobel Prize (Physiology or Medicine) in 1945 ‘for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases’.
