Study of black water fleas, shown under varying degrees of magnification, from above and below, with details of them at natural size.

The accompanying text is headed: ‘Sont les puces d'eau noires’ [‘Black water fleas’], and the author provides the following by way of description: ‘Dans a) et b) vous verres ces creatures de grosseur naturelle, Fig. 1. en presente une grossie par Nro. 5. couchee sur le ventre & presentant le dos. Sa couleur est bleu-noir, et toute la peau est comme une fine pelisse converte d'un poil menu, qui ne prend ni eau ni humidite’ [‘In a) and b) you see these creatures at natural size, fig. 1. presents one magnified by no. 5. lying on the stomach & presenting the back. Its colour is blue-black, and the whole skin is like a thin coat, which takes neither water nor humidity.’]
