Study of a section of a bullrush, Cyperaceae, from Spain, viewed by microscope, under magnification, with a detail showing it at natural size below.

Inscribed below: ‘M. F. L. del: A. W. W. Sculps et exc.’
The accompanying text is headed: ‘Un petit rond coupe d'un jonc d'Espagne’ [‘A small round cut of bullrush from Spain’], and the author writes: ‘Ce bois de jonc a divers canaux a Seve & a air, dont les uns sont fort larges & les autres exremement refferres. a) Fait voir ce rond de grandeur naturelle; mais b) le montre dans son grossissement par le Nro. 6. du verre anglois’ [‘This bullrush has various air channels, some of which are very wide and others much closer. a) Shows this circle at life size; but b) shows it under magnification by the no. 6 English lens’].
