    Microscopic study of a section of a fly’s body, viewed from above, showing where the thorax (a) meets the base of the wings (c, d), and the abdomen (e).

    Inscribed above: ‘TAB: XLI.’

    The accompanying text is headed: ‘La bas du corps de la mouche, considere par le dos’ [‘The lower body of a fly, viewed from above’].

    The author writes: ‘La figure & les couleurs de ces creatures different autant que leurs classes. Swammerdam a ramasse quatorze; Hufnagel Vingt-cinq communes & trente rares; & Gaedart Quarante huit especes de mouches’ [‘The bodies and colours of these creatures differ as much as their species. Swammerdam picked up fourteen; Hufnagel twenty five common and thirty rare; & Gaedart forty eight species of flies’].
