Alfred Gordon Gaydon (1911-2004), British spectroscopist and combustion scientist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1953. He was awarded the Society’s Rumford Medal in 1960 ‘in recognition of his distinguished work in the field of molecular spectroscopy and particularly its application to the study of flame phenomena’.
