Sir Edmund Langley Hirst (1898-1975), British chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1934. He received the Society’s Davy Medal in 1948 ‘in recognition of his outstanding work in the determination of the structure of sugars, starches, plant gums and especially of vitamin C’.
