Description
Head and shoulders profile portrait of Jan Ingenhousz within an oval frame. Ingenhousz is shown turned towards the left, as viewed, and is shown in a light jacket with a cravat and powdered wig that covers his ears and is tied in a ribbon at the back. The frame is surmounted by a crown of oak leaves.
Inscribed below: ‘J.INGENHOUSZ.C.ET ARCHIAT.CÆS./OB CAESAREAM PROLEM/INSITIONE VARIOLARUM SERVATAM/utinam citius ./A.L.L. ad vivum delin./Cunego inc. Romæ 1769.’
Jan Ingenhousz (1730-1799), Dutch Physiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1769, he delivered the Bakerian lecture in 1778 and again in 1779.
