Norman Wingate [Bill] Pirie (1907-1997), British biochemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1949. He was awarded the Society’s Leeuwenhoek Award in 1963 and its Copley Medal in 1971 ‘in recognition of his distinguished contributions to biochemistry and especially for his elucidation of the nature of plant viruses’.
