Guido Pellegrino Arrigo Pontecorvo (1907-1999), Italian-Scottish geneticist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955. He was awarded the Society’s Leeuwenhoek Award in 1962 and its Darwin Medal in 1978 ‘in recognition of his discovery of somatic recombination in fungi which led to the elucidation of an important type of genetic variation’.
