Sir Martin Ryle (1918-1984), British radio astronomer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1953. He was awarded the Society’s Hughes Medal, 1954, Bakerian Award, 1958, Royal Medal, 1973, and was joint recipient of the Nobel Prize (Physics) in 1974 with Antony Hewish (1924-2021) ‘for for their pioneering research in radio astrophysics’.
