Alan Thomas Stephenson (1898-1961), British marine biologist and artist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1951.
Sir Charles Maurice Yonge (1899-1986), British marine biologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1946.
Yonge organised and oversaw the Great Barrier Reef expedition of 1928-1929, and Stephenson led the field reef research.

Object history
This artwork was exhibited at a memorial exhibition of Stephenson’s paintings in 1964. The exhibition had many venues, including London, Glasgow and Cardiff, and Charles Maurice Yonge is believed to have purchased it at one of these. It passed from Yonge to Brian Morton in 1989, who donated it to the Society in 2021.
