Sir Richard Vynne Southwell (1888-1970), British mathematician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1925 and served on its Council between 1930-1931. He was awarded the Bakerian Award in 1943 and delivered the lecture on ‘relaxation methods: a mathematics for engineering sciences’.
