(Henry) Gerard Thornton (1892-1977), British microbiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1941, served as its Foreign Secretary between 1955-1960, and Vice President between 1959-1960. He was awarded the Society’s Leeuwenhoek’s award in 1955 and delivered the lecture on ‘the ecology of micro-organisms in soil’.
