Description
A painting of the colour distribution of rings of light observed when passing through a plate of topaz.
Plate 3 submitted with David Brewster's manuscript for his paper titled 'On the affections of light transmitted through crystallized bodies', published in volume 104 of Philosophical Transactions. Some illustrations submitted with the manuscript were published in black and white, but this was not among them.
Inscribed with title, publication, and plate details. A graphite inscription below the plate details reads 'Withdrawn'. Brewster was advised to submit this paper without coloured illustrations.
David Brewster (1781-1868) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1815 and was the recipient of the Copley Medal in 1815, the Rumford Medal in 1818, and the Royal Medal in 1830.
