Description
A watercolour painting showing 18 stages of the eclipse of the sun, as observed at Kew Green in Richmond from 12:25pm to 3:09pm on 7 September 1820.
Plate 1 from Everard Home's paper titled 'On the black rete mucosum of the Negro [sic], being a defence against the scorching effect of the sun's rays', published in volume 111 of Philosophical Transactions.
Inscribed with title, publication, and plate details. The time of each observation appears below each stage. Graphite inscription verso reads 'Sir Humphry Davy's Plates page 208.' Signed bottom left, 'Kew Green. Francis Bauer.'
Everard Home (1756-1832) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1787. He was the recipient of the Copley Medal in 1807, delivered the Croonian Lecture in 1790, 1793-1796, 1798-1801, 1817-1821, 1823-1827, and 1829, and served as Vice President of the Society from 1814-1830.
Franz Andreas Bauer (1758-1840) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. He delivered the Croonian Lecture in 1822.
