Caricature of William Jenner at full length, inclined slightly to the left as viewed, one arm behind his back the other holding his spectacles.
Inscribed in the bottom right corner: ‘Spy’
This caricature is titled ‘Physic’ and was number 62 of the ‘Men of the Day’ series published in Vanity Fair between 1868-1913.
The associated text reads: ‘Born fifty-eight years ago, he prosecuted the usual course of medical studies, and began his public career as a midwife. He then became attached to various charities and hopitals, was elected a Fellow and Lecturer to the Royal College of Physicians, and in 1861 achieved greatness by being made Physician Extraordinary to the Queen - a position which he exchanged the following year for what must be presumed to be promotion to that of Physician in Ordinary. In 1869 he added to this post that of Physician Extraordinary to the Prince of Wales, and ever since he has enjoyed whatever advantages and jealousies Royal favour can give […]’

Object history
Vanity Fair ’s ‘Men of the Day’ series, which featured a full page, colour caricature of a significant public figure and text commentary, largely written by "Jehu Junior", was a popular feature that ran between 1868 and 1913.
This print was donated to the Royal Society by former PRS Charles Scott Sherrington (1857–1952), as part of a bound volume featuring caricatures, photographs and signature facsimiles of the individuals.
