    Caricature of Louis Pasteur at three-quarter length, slightly inclined to the left as viewed and holding two white rabbits in his arms.

    Inscribed in the bottom right corner of the print: ‘.T.’
    Inscribed above: ‘VANITY FAIR Jany 8 1887’
    Inscribed below: ‘Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, Lith./ "Hydrophobia"'

    This caricature is titled ‘Hydrophobia’ and was number 372 of the ‘Men of the Day’ series published in Vanity Fair.

    Louis Pasteur (1882-1895), French chemist, was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1869 and was awarded its Rumford Medal, 1856, and Copley Medal, 1874.

    Object history
    Vanity Fair ’s ‘Men of the Day’ series, which featured a full page, colour caricature of a significant public figure and text commentary, largely written by "Jehu Junior", was a popular feature that ran between 1868 and 1913.

    This print was donated to the Royal Society by former PRS Charles Scott Sherrington (1857–1952), as part of a bound volume featuring caricatures, photographs and signature facsimiles of the individuals.
