Sir Edmund Langley Hirst (1898-1975), Knight chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1934. He was awarded the Davy Medal in 1948 and delivered the Bakerian Lecture in 1959 on ‘molecular structure in the polysaccharide group’.
