Maxwell Herman Alexander Newman (1897-1984), British mathematician and codebreaker, was elected a Fellow of the Royal society in 1939. He was awarded the Society’s Sylvester Medal in 1958 for ‘his distinguished contributions to combinatory topology, Boolean algebras and mathematical logic’.
