    Description
    Half length portrait of William Jones in a fur-trimmed robe with white lace neck-cloth and shirt cuffs. A book is held in his right hand, with the right arm resting against an architectural pillar.

    Inscribed: “Engraved by J.Posselwhite, from the Picture in the Hall of University College, Oxford. SIR WILLIAM JONES. WILLIAM MACKENZIE, GLASGOW, EDINBURGH, LONDON & NEW YORK.” In pencil lower left “FRS 1772”.

    Sir William Jones was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1772.
