Description
Landscape view of the appearance of Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument complex in Wiltshire, England, showing standing stones and lintels. With a scale below.
Plate 7 in the book The most notable antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stone-Heng on Salisbury Plain by Inigo Jones, edited by John Webb (London, 1655).
A note on the plate states that it is ‘The Ruin yet remaining drawn in Prospective’.
Inigo Jones (1573-1652) British architect and theatre designer, acted as surveyor of the King’s Works from 1615. He began to study the monument from 1620, a task set by James I. His book, in which he concluded that Stonehenge was built by Romans, not Britons, was edited by John Webb, was published posthumously.
