Description
Study of the front face of a shield assumed to be from the battle of Shrewsbury, in Shropshire, England, fought on 21 July 1403.
Plate A in the book A descriptive catalogue of antiquities, chiefly British, at Alnwick Castle, by John Collingwood Bruce (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1880). Inscribed above: ‘PLATE A’. Inscribed below: ’BUCKLER FOUND UPON THE BATTLE FIELD NEAR SHREWSBURY. Scale One half of the Original Size. D.Mossman Delt. C.F. Kell Lith.’
A note on the plate states that: The buckler is formed of several layers of stout leather, strongly compacted together by means of brass rivets, passing through narrow concentric bands of iron, thus forming a fretwork over the entire surface, which is slightly concave. There are fourteen rows of rivets’.
John Collingwood Bruce (1805-1892) British antiquary.
