    Four specimens of Roman earthenware lamps, with single wick burners, excavated from Pompeii, Italy. With inscriptions on their bases.

    Plate VI in the book A descriptive catalogue of antiquities, chiefly British, at Alnwick Castle, by John Collingwood Bruce (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1880). Inscribed above: ‘PLATE VI’. Inscribed below: ’LAMPS OF TERRA COTTA FOUND AT POMPEII. Scale, two thirds of the Original Size. D. Mossman Delt. C.F. Kell Lith.’

    These items are catalogued as nos.710-713 in the Alnwick Castle collection. Commentary is on the ornamentation of the lamps, including a representation of Jupiter and an eagle [upper figure, not numbered], a lion overpowering a stag [centre right], a theatre mask [centre left] and a Sun-God [lower figure].
