Description
Checked and spotted calico plate demonstrating the ‘Madder’ style of dyeing, with notes below on production: ‘MADDER RED AND PINK […] To produce this pattern, red liquor at 12 Tw., thickened with flour, is printed in for the red, and a much weaker red liquor, similarly thickened, for the pink. The pieces are then dunged, washed, dyed with madder, cleared and finished.’
Plate on page 576 of William Crookes’ A practical handbook of dyeing and calico-printing (London, 1874), which provided information about the chemistry and process of dyeing, specifically calico-dyeing.
Sir William Crookes (1832-1919), Knight chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1863 and served as its President between 1913-1915.
