Description
Landscape view of various glaciers in a mountain range of Zermatt in the Pennine Alps, Switzerland, including Lyksamm glacier to the left as viewed and the Breithorn glaciers centrally placed, below which lies their moraine. In the foreground, a group of travellers lie, eating a picnic.

Plate 3 from Louis Agassiz’s Etudes sur les glaciers: atlas de 32 planches (Neuchatel, 1840), a study of glaciers in Switzerland. Bound opposite a leaf of tissue paper numbered ‘3a’, with outline drawing of objects represented and annotations identifying them.
Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (1807-1873), Swiss-born American biologist and geologist, was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1838. He was awarded the Society’s Copley Medal in 1861 for his 'researches in palaeontology and other branches of science’. He also wrote prolifically on polygenism and was a proponent of scientific racism.
