    Description
Map centred on Antarctica, also showing New Zealand and other island groups, with the southern tips of Africa, Australia, and South America. Ocean contours illustrate depths in fathoms.

Headed: 'ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY, APRIL 10th 1911. SOUTH POLAR REGIONS. With the Antarctic Continent drawn to illustrate the probable topography as deduced from present available data by D. MAWSON, D.Sc., B.E.' Scale 1 inch: 631.3 miles.

The map was annotated by Douglas Mawson in red ink, to show the projected course of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. This included the proposed outward and return tracks of the expedition ship, ‘Aurora’, from Tasmania and returning to Australia. With other notes, including: ‘An oceanographic survey will be made of this area during the winter’.

Sir Douglas Mawson (1882-1958) British-born Australian scientist and explorer of Antarctica was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1923. He organized and led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914.
