    Description
    Three-quarter length seated portrait of Jorge Juan in an embroidered jacket with his crest of the Order of St. John visible on his left lapel. He holds an open copy of ‘Exámen Marítimo’, his treatise on the mechanics of sailing, in his lap. His right elbow rests on a small desk that is crowded with other books as well as a map of Cartagena, Colombia.

    Inscribed below: ‘D. JORGE JUAN,/Ilustre Marina, profundo Matematico,/cuyas obras le dieron el renombre de Sabio Español,/y serán eternos monmentos de su memoria/Nació en Novelda en 1713, murió en Madd en 1773.’ ‘J. Maea lo dibuxó.’ ‘Vazquez lo grabó.’

    Jorge Juan y Santacilia (1713-1773), Spanish mariner and mathematician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1749.
