Nikolaas Tinbergen (1907-1988), Dutch biologist and ornithologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1962 and awarded its Croonian award in 1972. He was also joint recipient with Karl von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz of the Nobel Prize (Physiology or Medicine) in 1973 ‘for their discoveries concerning organization and elicitation of individual and social behaviour patterns’.
