Inscribed: ‘Painted by G. R. Lewis Day & Haghe, Lithrs. To the Queen’ with facsimile signature and further handwritten inscription ‘From Sir E. Sabine’s Collection’.
Sir George Back (1796-1878), British Royal Navy officer, explorer of the Canadian Arctic, naturalist and artist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1847.
