Half-length portrait of John Blackburne, inclined slightly to the right as viewed, holing a bundle of paper and resting one arm on a desktop. Dressed in a dark dinner jacket and white necktie, with natural hair.
Inscribed: ‘Painted by Sir William Beechey R. A. Portrait painter to Her Majesty. Engraved by P. W. Tomkins. Historical Engraver to Her Majesty./ John Blackburn Est. M. P./ For the Proprietor. Published as the Act directs June 1801 by P. W. Tomkins. No. 49. New Bond Street, London.’ With further handwritten annotation ‘1794’.
John Blackburne (1754-1833), British landowner, Member of Parliament and High Sheriff of Lancashire, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1794.
