Half-length portrait of Charles Bonnet, seated with one arm resting on an open book, presented in an oval surrounded by the ‘Chain of nature’, which is represented with visuals of man, quadrupeds, birds, fishes, serpents, shellfish, insects, vegetables and minerals.
Inscribed: ‘CHARLES BONNET F.R.S./ Author of the Contemplation of Nature/ The CHAIN OF NATURE./ Caldwall sculpt./ London, Published by Dr. Thornton. May 1 1802.’
Charles Bonnet (1720-1793), Swiss naturalist and philosophical writer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1743.
