Head and shoulders portrait of Louis Antoine de Bougainville, inclined slightly to the right and looking out at the viewer. Dressed in a decorative jacket with white shirt and necktie, and queue wig.
Inscribed: ‘Z. Belliard. Lith de Delpech, a Paris./ Lis. Ane. DE BOUGAINVILLE.’ With further handwritten annotation ‘Elec 1756’.
Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811), French admiral and explorer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1756.
