Head and shoulders portrait of Gilbert Burnett, inclined to the left as viewed, looking out at the viewer, in clerical dress.
Inscribed: ‘The Right Reverend Father in God/ Gilbert Lord Bishop of Sarum &/ Chancellor of ye most Noble Order of ye Garter./ Painted from ye life by Mr: Ion. Riley Principall Painter in Ordniary to their Majtys: I. Smith fecit. Cum Privilegis Regis. Sold by R. Tompson at ye Sun in Bedford-berry & E Cooper at ye 3 Pidgeons in Bedford Street.’
Gilbert Burnett (1643-1715), Bishop of Salisbury and historian, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1664.
