Description
Figure of a system of tackle, with pullies and blocks, designed by John Smeaton.
The accompanying article states that: ‘If more than three pullies are plac’d side by side, on the same pin, or under one another, on several pins, very great inconveniences ensue…All these impediments are avoided by combining the two methods in one…with a tackle of this sort properly executed in large, one man will easily raise a ton, and a greater number of men in proportion…’
Figure illustrating the brief paper: ‘Extract of the Description of a new Tackle or Combination of Pullies’, by John Smeaton. The Gentleman’s Magazine, and historical chronicle…[edited] by Sylvanus Urban, v.24, (1754) pp.84-85.
John Smeaton (1724-1792), British civil engineer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
