Frederick Sanger (1918-2013), British biochemist, was elected a Fel-low of the Royal Society in 1954. He was awarded the Society’s Royal Medal, 1969, Croonian Award, 1975, Copley Medal, 1977, and was recipient of the Nobel Prize (Chemistry) in 1958 ‘for his work on the structure of proteins, especially that of insulin’.
