Description
Seated portrait of John Ellicott, inclined to the right as viewed, wearing a regency style jacket, white necktie and stockings, and white wig. His right elbow rests on a copy of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, open on the plate from Ellicott’s 1752 paper ‘A description of two methods, by which the irregularity of the motion of a clock, arising from the influence of heat and cold upon the rod of the pendulum, may be prevented’.
Inscribed below: ‘Nathl: Dance pinxt. Robt. Dunkarton fecit. John Ellicott F.R.S. Etat:67. Clockmaker to his Majesty.’
John Ellicott (1706-1772), British clockmaker, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1738.
