    Description
    Fanciful still life, with a central female head crowned with laurels, surrounded by natural and man-made objects. The scientific instruments include an armillary sphere, a telescope, and a chemical retort. These are shown with a flowering cactus and other representations of botany: and with insects, notably a beetle and a cricket.

    Headpiece appearing on the title-page of Transactions Philosphiques de la Société Royale de Londres…translated by François de Brémond, v.1 1731-32, (1741).

    Inscribed below: ‘Bouchardon In. Cx Scx retouche par Et. Gessart’.

    François de Brémond (1713-1742) French scientific translator, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1741.
