Description
Half-length seated portrait of William Roxburgh, turned to the left as viewed, eyes regarding the viewer. The sitter is shown wearing an unbuttoned high collared coat, waistcoat and lace cravat. To the sitter’s right is a table, upon which are books, an inkwell with a quill pen, and a botanical specimen in bloom.

Inscribed below: ‘William Roxburgh M.D. F.L.S. Superintendent of the Honble. The East India Company’s Botanic Garden at Calcutta, late Honorary Corresponding Member of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Engraved by Charles Warren Esqr., from a Miniature in the possession of Mrs. Roxburgh.’
William Roxburgh (1751-1815) British botanist active in India, was a Fellow of the Linnean Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
