Half-length portrait of Charles Taylor, seated, turned to the right as viewed, head inclined slightly and regarding the viewer. The sitter is shown wearing a coat, waistcoat and cravat, holding a quill pen in his right hand, in the act of writing.

Charles Taylor Howard (d.1816) British physician and calico printer in the firm of Taylor and Maxwell of Manchester, was later Secretary of the Royal Society of Arts from 1800.
