Sir Michael John Berridge (1938-2020), British physiologist and biochemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984. He gave the Croonian lecture in 1988 on inositol lipids and calcium signalling and was awarded the Royal Medal in 1991 in recognition of his discovery that inositol 1, 4, 5-trisphosphate functions as a second messenger to mobilize calcium.
