John Frank Adams (1930-1989), British mathematician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1964. He was awarded the Sylvester Medal in 1982 for his solution of several outstanding problems of algebraic topology and of the methods he invented for this purpose which have proved of prime importance in the theory of the subject.
