    Head and shoulders portrait of George William Gray inclined to the right as viewed and looking directly to camera. He wears spectacles and is dressed in a midtone pinstriped suit, white shirt and tie.

    Signed by the artist on the front mount and inscribed on the reverse ‘Box 3. PROF. G. W. GRAY FRS. SGRS 8345/28. Rec’d 14-i-85.’

    Stamped ‘COPYRIGHT GODFREY ARGENT STUDIO, 12 HOLLAND ST. LONDON W8 4LT. TEL: 937 0441, 937 4008.’ and ‘The Royal Society of London.’

    George William Gray (1926-2013), British chemist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1983. He was awarded the Leverhulme Medal in 1987 for his many contributions to the technologically important field of liquid crystals. He gave the Clifford Paterson lecture in 1985 on liquid crystals: an arena for research and industrial collaboration among chemists, physicists and engineers.
