Guido Pontecorvo (1907-1999), Italian-born British geneticist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955 and served on the Council from 1958 to 1959. He was awarded the Darwin Medal in 1978 in recognition of his discovery of somatic recombination in fungi which led to the elucidation of an important type of genetic variation. He gave the Leeuwenhoek lecture in 1962 on Microbial genetics: achievements and prospects.
