Sir William Rede Hawthorne (1913-2011), British engineer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955 and served on the Council between 1968 and 1981. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 1982 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to engineering thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, and particularly the internal aerodynamics of turbomachines.
