Sir William Richard Shaboe Doll (1912-2005), British physician and epidemiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1966, he served on the Council from 1970 to 1971. He was awarded the Buchanan Medal in 1972 "for his outstanding studies on the aetiology, prevention and treatment of disease, especially cancer" and the Royal Medal in 1986 "In recognition of his pioneering use of statistical and epidemiological techniques to evaluate environmental factors in disease, notably that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease and bronchitis."
