Sir Basil John Mason (1923-2015), British physicist and meteorologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1965 and served as its Treasurer between 1976-1986. He was awarded the Society’s Rutherford Award, 1990, and Royal Medal, 1991.
Sir Roger James Elliott (1928-2018), British theoretical physicist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1976 and served on its Council from 1983 to 1988 and was Physical Secretary and Vice President between 1984-1988. He presented the Rutherford Memorial Lecture in 1985 and the Blackett Memorial in 1988.
Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley (1917-2012), British cell biologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955 and served as its President between 1980-1985. He was awarded the Society’s Copley Medal, 1973, Croonian Award, 1967, Florey Award, 1982, and Blackett Award, 1984, and was joint recipient of the Nobel Prize (Physiology or Medicine) in 1963 for ‘discoveries concerning the ionic mechanisms involved in excitation and inhibition in the peripheral and central portions of the nerve cell membrane’.
Sir David Cecil Smith (1930-2018), British botanist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1975 he served on its Council as Vice President between 1978 to 1980 and was Biological secretary and Vice President between 1983 to 1987.
Sir Arnold Stanley Vincent Burgen (1922-2022), British physician and pharmacologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1964 and served on its Council from 1972 to 1973 and 1980 to 1986, working as Foreign Secretary between 1981 and 1986.’ He presented the Florey Lecture in 1984 on Order and disorder: targets for drug action.
